2017-2020 planning meeting for WAN

The annual meeting of Coordinators and State Focal Points of the West Africa Network for the Protection of Children (WAN), which took place in Dakar, Senegal on 24 and 25 July 2017 marked a decisive turning point in the life of the Network . It was decisive because for the first time the state focal points of the member countries were present, in accordance with the recommendation of the steering committee of November 2016. Decisive also because in place of the traditional coordination’s meeting, this was this year a planning meeting, which allow to:

  • Define the role and responsibilities of state focal points; these focal points from national state services will now be part of the national coordination, hence the need to define their roles and responsibilities
  • Adopt the Peer Review indicators on the protection of children on the move and young migrants; This review began at the Steering Committee meeting of 2016 in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire and will be held annually under the auspices of the Gender and Social Affairs Commission of ECOWAS
  • Conduct strategic planning of WAN for 2017-2020
  • Develop a plan of collaboration with the African Movement of Working Children and Youth (AMWCY)

This meeting, organized by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), with technical support from the International Social Service of West Africa (ISS-WA), provided an opportunity to share with WAN partners, the french version of the “ ECOWAS Support Procedures and Standards for the Protection and Reintegration of Vulnerable Children on the Move and Young Migrants “. The Portuguese version is being finalized and will be available shortly
