Official launch of the « ECOWAS Support Procedures and Standards for the Protection and Reintegration of Vulnerable Children on the Move and Young Migrants”, a reference manual which explains the transnational methodology of support for children adopted by ECOWAS.
After the adoption of the regional organization, West Africa Network for the protection of children (WAN), as a transnational mechanism of support and reintegration of children and young migrants on the move in December 2015, ECOWAS, during the 12th steering committee meeting conjointly organized with his partners, launched the Manual «ECOWAS Support Procedures and Standards for the Protection and Reintegration of Vulnerable Children on the Move and Young Migrants» which translates the transnational methodology of support for children on the move.
This manual, based on more than 10 years of experience of WAN in terms of transnational support of children on the move and young migrants explains the 8 steps experimented by WAN and approved by ECOWAS for the support and reintegration of children on the move, since their identification till their return in a stable family environment where they can develop better perspectives for the future. This support and reintegration is ensured by a chain of actors from States side (national directors of child protection) and civil society.
The launch of the manual marks a decisive turning point in the functioning of the regional network, which becomes the reference mechanism in terms of supports of children on the move and young migrants. With the organization of an annual review, the steering committee meeting also becomes a framework of evaluation of the implementation of national policies of support and protection of children, efforts of the States and civil society for the support of children on the move and young migrants.
The newly launched manual has the 8 following steps for a complete and efficiency support for children
- Emergency care
- Study of the personal situation
- Family tracing and Assessment
- Alternative placement
- Social and professional reintegration
- Follow-up and Monitoring
- Family and Community support
